It's a great way to blend the product and people knowledge that I was talking about. I would still contend that people knowledge wins the day and the smart salesperson provides different prospects with different content - depending on what has been ascertained about needs and interests.Chuck Englishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10928111911465428746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3170109963472822023.post-38110111766559310662013-01-29T15:10:03.682-05:002013-01-29T15:10:03.682-05:00Content marketing is a way to engage prospects thr...Content marketing is a way to engage prospects throughout the ever-more dynamic consumer decision journey. Clever application of content via owned media can cut down on prospecting costs and can contribute to or enhance the relationship, which of course, ultimately, is a one-to-one affair.

Recently I started looking for a new car. So far I have visited Acura (currently own) and Honda. Both salespeople really could have made deeper connections with me with a bit of content to help me with my decision. In one case, the salesperson just wanted to close on the spot. In the other, he was too passive — said he would send me some material online, but never did. With the content marketing and sales funnel tools available today, I was astounded that they didn't try something, anything(!) with a content approach.Richard Tokerhttp://www.richcontent.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3170109963472822023.post-23931510814558500012013-01-28T19:04:37.492-05:002013-01-28T19:04:37.492-05:00You're right Ruth. There's no question that it can boost sales leads and can help in qualifying prospects. There are ways to use content marketing to profile prospects so that your sales efforts can be more efficient. But I think that it's easy to get caught up in the hyperbole and forget that success still depends on the quality of personal interaction.Chuck Englishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10928111911465428746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3170109963472822023.post-67439580054660483592013-01-28T15:28:41.286-05:002013-01-28T15:28:41.286-05:00Obviously I have a comment here. I know Marcus, and I'm quite sure he would agree that only in rare cases would a substantial sale be closed without a 'live', face-to-face conversation.

I see content marketing as a support to the full sales cycle. It doesn't REPLACE other meaningful sales' strategy; it rather supports it.

If you read Gary Vaynerchuk's The Thank You Economy, he explains how the power has been put back in the hands of the consumer. Whereas a decade ago, marketing was really a one-way conversation, today, with the introduction of blogging, Google's new algorithm and emerging social media platforms, consumers have better access and louder voices.

So a thoughtful content marketing strategy allows you to engage those prospective customers earlier in the sales cycle, more meaningfully, and with greater insight and opportunity.

It's true that later sales cycle decisions consider other variables, including rapport, relationships and real-life experience, but don't discount the impact of content marketing to that end.

Here is a statistic to chew on - 97% of ALL purchasing decisions are initiated with an online search. If you don't have meaningful content available online, responding directly to those searches, you won't even be on the consumer's radar. There will be no face-to-face meeting.Ruth Zivehttp://www.marketingwise.canoreply@blogger.com
